Test drive Mitsubishi Outlander

Updated Mitsubishi Outlander broke with the conservative past and now attracts customer audience fashionable “attire”, the improved comfort, more dynamics and chassis settings drive.

Since the debut of the first generation Mitsubishi Outlander in 2003, this car was positioned as a “workhorse”, a purely utilitarian midsize coupe for people over 40. But then the Japanese have tried different ways to expand the audience of buyers. Therefore, in 2006, the second generation Outlander was surprisingly gambling chassis tuning and steering, and three years later in the model has tried restyling unexpectedly aggressive “front”, inspired by the shape of the jet fighter F-2, releases Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in cooperation with the American Lockheed Martin.

Later, in 2012, the Japanese once again bet on the “age” audience: the third-generation model to get such a neutral appearance that the Russian division of the company started to “rejuvenate” the crossover using the tuning package Samurai (plastic lining on the bumper visually increases falsh- grille). During the facelift in 2014, this “mask” has acquired pursuant to the factory, and in April of this year at the auto show in New York, revealed himself perhaps the most stylish and aggressive Outlander – with X-shaped “facade”, which the company calls “dynamic shield.”

When the Paris Motor Show I first saw the prototype 2016 model year crossover design the front part just seemed provocative. After Paris “demonstration” took place against the background of the scandal: it turns out that the future Outlander well, very similar to the full-face future trends VAZ Lada Vesta and XRay. Whatever it was, nor AvtoVAZ or Mitsubishi, did not seem to intend to defend the copyright in court. It is understandable. After all, if you look closely in the Outlander closely, you will find more parallels, say, with the models Lexus, Tolyatti than novelties. In general, designers Mitsubishi «caught in the trend”, and in the future this “face” will be offered to all new models of the brand.

What is gained thanks Outlander facelift? In addition to the more aggressive “face” is improved aerodynamics, on the one hand, impairs geometric cross – on the other. Due to the increased front overhang by 40 mm approach angle decreased from 22,5 ° to 21 °. In addition, almost all the elements of the exterior received a more thorough study. For example, the taillights have found stylish chopped form and become LEDs for all versions. A side wall decorated with plastic moldings, now do not look flat and unassumingly. Same story with the head optics, which can be an extra charge LED, with a textured front fenders and wheels (which, incidentally, also made it easier to reduce the unsprung masses).

Inside, too, there have been dotted, but important changes. Breath of fresh air introduced new steering wheel with powerful tides under the canopy and grip equipment, leather leather. Upholstery chairs became better, buttons multimedia center – a neat and decorative inserts under a tree and did look trendy. There was also a nest for transponder key c in the center console. Forgot to remove the key – car chided for forgetfulness beeping.

Against this background, upset that the rear sofa with adjustable backrest, despite the completion geometry, remained flat front seat, too little is not enough lateral support. Finally, the Japanese have some reason did not get rid of the big labels in white font “Passenger” and “passenger air bag” on the center console.

In terms of improved comfort and a lot of work. First of all, Outlander has kept its main advantage – a very spacious interior. Oddly sit down, you can feel – the car rather big, crowded not have, even if on board five. In this version of the seven-seat layout in (once these were offered for Outlander XL) is neither produced in Kaluga or do not plan to import – there is no corresponding demand. Of course, it was spacious and the trunk at 477 liters. Inside the cover – a felt pretty decoration. By cons is ranked as the fact that the rear doors open to a relatively small angle – uncomfortable.

The second real breakthrough moment, which is not noted with the naked eye, – significantly improved sound insulation. The scale of the work done in this regard are enormous – thicker windshield and rear window (both with electric heating function in all trim levels), adding to the suspension design and fixtures aggregates dynamic dampers (rubber elements that reduce vibrations) and, of course, the use of additional anti-noise mats. Interestingly, in the 2016 model year car involved last point – in places where engineers found the source of vibration and noise. As a result, a new system of noise reduction turned out very easy – no more than 5 kg.

Suspension settings adjusted with a view to commissioning the machine mainly on asphalt. For this engineers have used a larger volume dampers and stiffer springs. At the same time set up a steering sharper. Coupled with an increase in the number of spot welds body panels, these measures have a predictable result – the car became more alive and sensitive to the control actions, lower heel and “sleepy” during braking. Ride has declined, but not to the extent to make the ride uncomfortable on bad roads.

And, finally, about motors and transmissions. Outlander preserved range of three petrol engines – 2.0 liter (145 hp), 2.4 liter (167 hp) and 3.0 liter (230 hp) and got the first two versions updated CVT Jatco, already tested earlier in the “junior” model ASX. Outlander with top-end petrol “six” is still equipped with a 6-band “automatic.” Machines with 2-liter engine can be both mono- and all-wheel drive, for versions 2.4 and 3.0 four-wheel drive is offered exclusively. As for the hybrid Outlander, it does not come under restyling, and, moreover, the supply of cars from Japan temporarily halted due to a sharp rise in the ruble price of this modification.

Drayverskogo spirit returned, driving habits managed to pull a more menacing appearance – this is the first impression after a few minutes behind the wheel of the updated “Japanese”. Outlander is a better place to listen to the helm, and the delay vatnost with reactions to taxi disappeared. Yes, the car became more details read the defects of asphalt, but, firstly, these flaws are not transmitted to the steering wheel, low vibration, and secondly, I would not say extremely stiff suspension restyling crossover (car chassis of the second generation was in this respect more “Oak”). This chassis tuning 3-liter cars seemed to me much harder than the less powerful Outlander. On the other hand, if the suspension SUVs with engines of 2.0 and 2.4 liters may work to hang up on the roads, then the 3-liter Outlander chassis is almost impossible to break – a flint!

The second important change in driving behavior due to the nature of the work migrated variable transmission. As is the case with the ASX, cars, get a new node, become alive to respond to the “gas”, the acceleration is not accompanied by a specific buzz, and the nature of the switching is more like that of automatic transmissions. Finally, the acceleration to “hundreds” of all versions with CVT has improved by 0.3 seconds, and this increase in the dynamics of a very noticeable!

Machines with 2-liter engine in the course of the presentation, unfortunately, failed to try. Versions with the 2,4 and 3-liter liked equally, although the pavement and off-road vehicles such behave differently. Outlander from the “average” motor (by the way, is the best-selling in our market) please sharpened primarily a response to the “gas” and brisk pickup during acceleration from low to medium speeds. As for the 3-liter version, the king of the autobahn this car would preclude becoming gearbox. It is not a slowness “automatic” switch just perfectly clear. Just mode «Drive» System protects the box and slaughter of fuel economy – accelerated turns linear and therefore not very invigorating. And in sport mode automatic transmission, alas, it is not available. However, there is a solution: wielding paddles “petals”, you can advance to dump one or a couple of gears to the acceleration – once it becomes apparent high potential 230-horsepower engine.

In addition, the 3-liter version on the roads rehabilitated and slippery roads. The fact is that unlike machines with “junior” motors are used in more advanced all-wheel drive Transmission S-AWC. Electromagnetic clutch, pull juggle between the front and rear wheels, is assisted by the front differential and a “smart” system stabilization brakes the wheel with the least traction. Not surprisingly, the top-end Outlander equally good on rough terrain and fast and slippery turns.
